As a hobby game developer, I’m constantly tinkering with my projects. Lately, I’ve been diving deep into my wargame, fine-tuning the mechanics and aesthetics. In this blog post, I’ll share some recent updates and insights without the drama—just the nuts and bolts of progress.
Refining Combat Calculations
One of the most crucial aspects of any wargame is the combat system. I’ve been working tirelessly to get the calculations just right. While a simple formula like “enemy_cv / own_cv * baseCasualties” provided a starting point, it wasn’t enough.
So, I decided to incorporate odds into the equation. The new formula now reads as follows: “enemy_cv / own_cv * baseCasualties – (my_odds / 100).” The result? Well, it seems to be yielding more accurate and satisfying results in tests with various units.
It’s fascinating how a subtle adjustment can make a significant difference in the outcome of battles. By factoring in odds, the gameplay experience becomes more dynamic and strategic.
Aesthetic Evolution
Aside from combat mechanics, I’ve also been paying attention to the visual aspects of my wargame. As you can see in the screenshot, I’ve been reworking some tiles to achieve a style I’m comfortable with.
The screenshot may appear somewhat simplistic at first glance, but it’s all part of the iterative process. I’ve started adding more details, like the railroad tracks and river tiles you can spot. These subtle additions may seem minor, but they contribute to the overall aesthetics of the game.
Achieving the right balance between aesthetics and gameplay functionality is a delicate dance, and I’m committed to perfecting it. I believe that as more details are added, the game’s visual appeal will continue to improve.

So, there you have it—my journey as a hobby game developer, working diligently on my wargame project. No dramatic twists or turns, just the steady progress and adjustments that come with the territory.
