Introduction:
In the world of game development, maintaining consistent momentum can be a challenging endeavor. There comes a point where the urge to continue dwindles, often sparked by gameplay that lacks excitement or unforeseen issues. I’ve encountered such obstacles but have made significant progress with version 0.0.9, rejuvenating my passion for the project. Let’s dive into the latest updates:
What’s New?
A Season per Turn Instead of a Month:
Initially, the game was modeled after Paradox Interactive’s titles, featuring fast-paced, pausable real-time gameplay. Over time, we shifted to a more manageable turn-based system where each turn represented a month. However, this approach led to a sluggish flow, particularly concerning population growth (taking too long for newborns to mature) and the vital grain harvest (requiring too many turns). To address this, I’ve now implemented a system based on seasons.
The Weaver: Flax, Wool, & Clothing:
We’ve introduced new resources: flax (gathered and harvested plants) and wool (from sheep), which can be transformed into clothing, provided the settlement has one or more weavers. Residents consume clothing each turn (due to wear and tear), and their clothing demands vary based on their status.
New Snow Tileset:
I’ve finally revamped the snow tiles. Previously, their base color was white, which proved too bright and glaring on screen, obscuring details. Inspired by other games, I’ve shifted to using more grey and blue tones.
Neutral Settlements:
The game now features neutral settlements with simulated inhabitants. While interactions are not yet possible, there are already Zones of Control (ZOCs). Trespassing through a neutral settlement’s territory or settling nearby could lead to friction.
Minor Bug Fixes:
Numerous small bugs have been addressed, enhancing overall gameplay stability.
Closing Thoughts:
These updates reflect my commitment to evolving and refining the game. Each challenge faced has been an opportunity to innovate and enhance the player experience. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue on this exciting journey of game development.
